Vista. I can still remember the feel of gravel under my feet, the sound of
footsteps during both races and practices, and the nervous anticipation I
felt before each and every event in which I competed. Not only did the sport
teach me the value of hard work, perseverance, and dedication, but it
introduced me to people who are still my friends today. Though I don't
compete any longer, I still love the sport of track and field; in many ways,
it made me the person I am today.
The new track is amazing, and I'd be remiss not to thank everyone involved in
the project, and also for the fact that it was named after me. My own role
was quite small when compared with the work of others, and it's an honor --
and a privilege -- to have been able to help. My hope is that students at
the school and other community members enjoy and appreciate the wonderful
gift for which so many worked so hard for so long.
