SJS High School Track and Field Transitions Through the Years
- 1942 the Sac Joaquin Section was created by dividing the Northern Section into the SJS and NS.
- 1944 the SJS held their first Boys Section Finals. Events competed were the 100y, 220y, 440y, 880y, Mile, 120y high (39") hurdles, 160y low (30") hurdles, 880y Relay, High Jump, Broad (Long) Jump, Pole Vault, and Shot Put (12 lb). The boys competed in two classifications (Class A, B,) based on their age, weight and height. The A Class was considered "Varsity".
- 1945 Boys added a third classification (C Class).
- 1947 Boys went from 160y low hurdles to 180y low hurdles.
- 1964 SJS went from 2 state meet qualifiers to 3.
- 1964 Boys began competition in the 2 mile.
- 1964 Boys discus began competition as an exhibition.
- 1965 Boys went from Class A, B, C divisions to Varsity, Frosh/Soph divisions.
- 1966 Boys began official competition in the discus.
- 1967 Boys triple jump competition began as an exhibition.
- 1967 Boys 440 relay competition began as an exhibition.
- 1967 Boys mile relay competition began as an exhibition.
- 1968 Boys went from 880 yard relay to mile relay.
- 1968 Boys began official competition in the 440 relay.
- 1973 Boys began official competition in the triple jump.
- 1974 Girls track and field began competition in the SJS, across California and the U.S.
- 1975 Girls began competition in the discus.
- 1975 Boys went from 180 yard low (30 inch) hurdles to 330 yard low hurdles.
- 1976 Girls went from a 880 yard relay to a mile relay.
- 1977 Girls went from 80 yard low (30 inch) hurdles to 110 yard low hurdles.
- 1977 Girls began competition in the 2 mile.
- 1980 Girls Shot Put went from an 8 pound shot to a 4k shot.
- 1980 All running events went from imperial measurement to metric (100 yards to 100 meters, 220y to 200m etc.)
- 1981 Girls began competition in the 300 meter low hurdles.
- 1982 Girls began competition in the triple jump.
- 1984 Boys 300 meter low hurdles (30 inch) went to 36 inch intermediate hurdles.
- 1993 Girls 100 meter hurdles went from 30 inch hurdles to 33 inch hurdles.
- 1995 Girls began competition in the pole vault.
- 2002 CIF implemented at large marks for state meet qualification.
- 2005 The SJS transitioned from sub-section meets to a Divisional Meet format
