14. Mike Swanson (Esperanza) 49-4
15. Craig Wood (Alta Loma) 48-1
16. Charlie Brown (Moorpark) 46-11
--Noah Bryant looked very, very explosive, with a couple of fouls near the
end that may have been farther than his winning toss!!! Brian Ruziecki
just did not have the snap that gave him a 61-footer already outdoors this
winter. John Caulfield of La Salle will be a smaller schools power in
the sport, with Thomas Navarro of Arizona probably pound for pound the
longest thrower we will see this year--he cannot be more than 160 pounds!

--Look Out!!! Billie Jo Grant, a tremendous athlete has given up basketball
for track full time--big things are assured from Coach Budke's weight
program for her. Kelly Burton of Utah, who said she will be back here
for April's Arcadia Invite has had two months of snow, so this was
impressive. Kamaiya Warren had to hustle back for a League finals
basketball game Saturday evening (that was the day of the meet!!!).
Melissa Faubus looked good, with a near pr!!!

--Jaren Morgan of the greater Palm Springs area, was out to a shocking
187 feet near the end of the season, then had an "off-day" in the Section
prelim action in 2001. His 178 here early was solid, with soph Kyle
Hammerquist of Webb very, very impressive with his second place effort!

11. Quiana Adams (Muir) 37-6
12. Jennifer Ward (Bakersfield South) 35-10 1/2
--Wow! What a good early season competition, probably the most ever over
44' this early in the year! There will be some rocking competitions
down the road this spring! Again, Warren has been concentrating on
basketball, so she will be ready for some far action!!! Burton is a 48'
footer, so she will be dangerous, with Varner and Taumua proven
commodities when it comes to the competitive department! Could be an
interesting spring at Arcadia and other affairs!!!

--Asked why the improvement this year, Rachel Viau, Oral Roberts bound,
where she will train with Coach Joe Dial, "A great deal of time in the
weight room, and a couple of hours a day of vaulting!!!" Great field here
with great results. The bar seemed to be very, very forgiving this day,
with some of the higher clearances marked by some serious banging of the
crossbar as athletes went over. Rivera set an El Salvador National Record
with her 12-00 clearance!!!. Another event that will be a highlight of the
spring season. Relative novice Kira Costa continues to compete very
strongly, with the 14.87 hurdler and 17-11 Long Jumper over 12-00 here,
duplicating her impressive effort from the Reno Vault Summit!!

couple of good jumps in all the divisions all day long!

EVENT 15. HS Girls 4x160 Relay (6 races)

Meet Record: 1:12.5, Riverside North, 2000

RACE ONE
1. Long Beach Poly 1:12.7
2. Muir 1:14.8
--LB Poly looked very sharp in what probably was prep history's #2
clocking ever!! Turns out that Dominique Dorsey from Inglewood (12.15w-
24.27 last year in sprints) has transferred to "Jackrabbitville," with
the group already there probably assuring something below 45.0 in the 400
relay, with baton passes the only thing between the group and the
National record in the event!!! JW North (Riverside) was an interesting
no-show for the affair as an entire team.

RACE TWO

1. Los Angeles Baptist 1:16.2

EVENT 59. WAREHOUSE SHOE SALE MEN'S MILE
WR: 3:48.45, Hicham El Guerrouj (Morocco), 1997
AR: 3:51.8, Steve Scott (Sub 4), 1981
MR: 3:52.9, Eamonn Coghlan (Ireland), 1980
1. Bernard Lagat (Nike/Kenya) 3:56.34
2. Jonathon Riley (Unattached) 3:59.92
3. Jason Pyrah (Nike) 4:00.25
4. Clyde Colenso (South Africa) 4:02.01
5. Donald Sage (Stanford) 4:05.38
6. Jeremy Huffman (Nike Farm Team) 4:06.30
7. James Adams (Cal Baptist) 4:13.05
8. Ricky Etheridge (Unattached) 4:13.25
9. Matt Rainwater (Cal Poly Pomona) 4:22.84
RACE IN REVIEW: Etheridge paced the field through the first quarter
mile. Lagat moved to the front at 600 yards and pulled away to battle
the clock. Behind him, Pyrah moved easily past Colenso after 880 yards
to position himself behind Lagat. As Lagat churned home for a strong
win, Riley had an excellent final lap to grab second from Pyrah at the
tape. Lagat's time is the best in the L.A. Invitational since 1985, when
Eamonn Coghlan ran exactly the same time. Lagat becomes only the second
miler in the meet history to record a fourth straight victory in the
mile (the other one is Steve Scott, 1989-1992).
--Bernard Lagat always comes to run!!! After a 57 second first 440,
and 1:57 first 880, Lagat effortlessly moved away, with the crowd in
anticipation of a sub-4 effort. Bernard continued his solo effort to
the finish, with all appreciative of the super African's style and
determination, with above stats on the quality of his effort on this
facility.

coming by the 1320 at 3:41. The Santa Rosa star kept the pressure on

Strutzel led from start to finish with Browne edging up and past at one
point. Good final lap had Jess edge in ahead for another LA Invitational
win for the former UCLA star!

6. Francesca Flores (Cal Baptist) 4:49.87
7. Maurica Carlucci (Stanford) 4:54.41
8. Ursula Kremer (South Africa) 4:56.93
RACE IN REVIEW:
Leaders:
440: Fleshman 68.4
880: Fleshman 2:19.1
1320: Fleshman 3:28.8
-Lauren Fleshman, earlier in the 800 in this meet, helped with pacing
until the final two laps here! Malindi Elmore was looking for an NCAA
Qualifier (4:43.20) which she was able to achieve. We figured out that
Sally Hauser used to be Sally Glynn (now we just have to figure out
which of the Hauser twins she married!!!). Good race to close out the
evening, with Alejandra Barrientos (UCLA frosh) a good 4:48.48 effort
for 5th in the strong Open and International Field (Elmore was World
University Games Finalist for Canada last summer!!!).
