2001 Bella Vista Bronco Cross Country Invitational Story
2001 Bella Vista Bronco Cross Country Invitational – Meet Records Abound
Clear skies and relatively mild weather (temperatures in the low 70’s) greeted athletes from over 30 schools to the scenic Sierra College (Rocklin) cross country course and the Second Annual Bella Vista Bronco Cross Country Invitational. With all athletes in each classification competing in the same race and team/individual champions and placers determined on large (CIF Division 1 and 2) and small (CIF Division 3,4, and 5) school divisions, the meet provided a unique opportunity for "head-to-head" competition. Varsity races were contested over the 5,000-meter collegiate course, which covers approximately 99% of the standard high school three-mile course and an additional 188 yards.
In the varsity girls competition, Maria Carillo (Santa Rosa) senior Jenny Aldridge was a convincing winner covering the 5,000 meter course in 18:41.1 (18:01.4 for three miles converted) and eclipsing Liz Camy’s (Chico) large school meet record by 53 seconds. Junior Alexis Bartschi of West (Tracy) was second in 18:51.3 (18:11.3 for three miles converted) and senior Laura Muller (Woodland) third in 18:58.3 (18:18.0 for three miles converted) with both marks also breaking the meet record. Aldridge’s performance led her Maria Carillo teammates to the large school team championship with 49 points and a team time record of 101:30 (97:55 for three miles converted). Placer (Auburn) finished second behind Kim Crouch with 79 points edging by one point the Davis Blue Devils led by senior Sarah West.
Ciera Viehweg of St. Ignatius (San Francisco) finished fifth overall to capture the small school individual title in 19:28.3 (18:47.0 for three miles converted). Her effort was also a new meet record eclipsing the mark established last year by Niki Hodgeson (Bear River, Grass Valley) of 20:18.3. St. Mary’s (Berkeley) senior Bridget Duffy was second in 19:43.2 (19:01.4 for three miles converted) with Amber Ross (South Lake Tahoe) third in 19:59.4 (19:17.0 for three miles converted), both also under the previous meet record. Led by Jennifer James in 20:11.2 (19:28.4 for three miles converted) Enterprise of Redding captured first place in the small school division with a meet record team time of 105:31 (101:47 for three miles converted). This eclipsed the previous mark held by St. Francis (Sacramento) by 2:30. In a closely contested battle for second through fourth, St. Ignatius (San Francisco) finished second with 61 points, South Lake Tahoe was third with 62 points, and Del Oro (Loomis) was fourth with 63 points.
In the boys competition, defending CIF State Division 5 champion Tim Nelson (Liberty Christian, Redding) was in command the entire race finishing in a small school meet record time of 16:24.3 (15:49.5 for three miles converted). Senior Jordan Kinley (Maria Carillo, Santa Rosa) was second overall and first for the large school division in 16:40.4 (16:05.0 for three miles converted) with Enterprise’s Kenny Frank third overall (second in small school) in 16:49.0 (16:13.3 for three miles converted). Led by junior Will Moroski, Davis captured first place in the large school division with 51 points with Wood (Vacaville), paced by Jason Carwile, in second with 60 points and Chico finishing third with 128 points. With strong running from Bryan Lorentz and Aaron Bush, St. Ignatius (San Francisco) captured the small school division with 27 points and a meet record time of 87:47 (84:41 for three miles converted). Enterprise (Redding) finished second with 42 points and Colfax led by Colin Wood was third with 84 points.
In the underclass races a number of meet records were established also and are summarized in the following table:
